The One Day Uncle Profit Let His Guard Down

The One Day Uncle Profit Let His Guard Down

For as long as anyone in the neighbourhood could remember, there had been an unspoken war raging between Uncle Profit and the garden gnomes.

It wasn't the sort of war that made the evening news. There were no dramatic speeches or heroic cavalry charges. Instead, it was fought over immaculate lawns, perfectly trimmed hedges, freshly painted fences, and an endless series of increasingly elaborate pranks. Every flower pot was a potential hiding place, every garden ornament a possible spy, and every suspicious rustle in the bushes was enough to send Uncle Profit reaching for his trusty shotgun.

The gnomes had spent years trying to reclaim the suburb they once considered their own. Uncle Profit had spent just as long making sure they regretted every attempt.

Some days the gnomes stole his tools. Other days they rearranged his garden furniture in the middle of the night or mysteriously replaced his prize-winning roses with weeds. But alas, Uncle Profit always found a way to strike back. By now, both sides had developed an almost professional respect for one another's schemes. Neither expected the other to ever truly give up.

Then summer arrived…

For the first time in what felt like forever, the garden was peaceful. The hedges were perfectly square, not a mushroom had been painted overnight, and there hadn't been a single sighting of a pointy red hat in weeks. Uncle Profit allowed himself to believe that perhaps, just perhaps, he had finally won.

Victory, as it turns out, can be surprisingly dangerous.

Confident that the gnomes had finally admitted defeat, Uncle Profit decided to do something he hadn't done in years. He took a day off.

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the barbecue was already warming up for later that evening. He unfolded his favourite sun lounger, placed a large glass of homemade lemonade on the small table beside him, grabbed a newspaper, and carefully applied a generous layer of sunscreen before settling into the perfect summer afternoon.

What Uncle Profit didn't know was that four pairs of tiny eyes had been watching him from behind the hedge all morning.

The gnomes had almost given up trying to outsmart their long-time rival. Every prank they had attempted over the past few months had failed miserably. Uncle Profit had become too cautious, too experienced, and far too suspicious of anything that looked even remotely unusual.

"You can't trick someone who's expecting to be tricked," muttered one of the gnomes.

Another scratched his beard thoughtfully before smiling.

"But what if," he whispered, "we wait until he forgets we're here?"

The idea spread through the group instantly. For weeks they had been trying to defeat Uncle Profit in battle, when all they really needed was patience.

They waited until the newspaper slowly slipped onto his chest and the unmistakable sound of gentle snoring drifted across the garden.

Only then did they make their move.

One gnome kept watch from behind the hedge while another quietly crept across the lawn. Years of sneaking through gardens without being noticed had turned him into something of an expert. Not even the birds seemed aware of his presence.

On the table beside Uncle Profit sat two nearly identical bottles. One contained SPF 50 sunscreen. The other was a bottle of tanning lotion someone had carelessly left behind after last weekend's neighbourhood barbecue.

The gnome couldn't believe his luck.

Within seconds, the bottles had changed places, every label was facing exactly the right direction, and the little saboteur had vanished back into the bushes without leaving so much as a blade of grass out of place.

When Uncle Profit finally woke from his afternoon nap, everything appeared exactly as he'd left it.

The sun had moved higher in the sky, however, so naturally he reached for the bottle beside him.

"Can't be too careful," he mumbled as he generously covered his arms, shoulders, face and legs.

Hidden behind the hedge, the gnomes watched in complete silence. Nobody dared laugh. Not yet...

The true masterpieces always required patience.

For the next two hours, Uncle Profit enjoyed what he would later describe as "the most relaxing afternoon of my life." He finished his newspaper, refilled his lemonade twice, admired his beautifully maintained garden and even allowed himself a brief moment of satisfaction. Perhaps the gnomes really had moved on.

Unfortunately, the sun had other plans.

By early evening, his skin had begun to feel unusually warm. At first he blamed the weather. Then he blamed the heatwave. Finally, he caught sight of his reflection in the patio door.

His face had turned a remarkable shade of crimson, and his shoulders looked even worse.

By the time he rolled up his sleeves, he resembled a lobster that had spent far too long in the oven.

The laughter erupted immediately.

The hedge shook so violently that one of the gnomes nearly fell through it. Another was laughing too hard to stand upright, while a third proudly held the empty tanning lotion bottle above his head like a championship trophy.

Only then did Uncle Profit realise what had happened. The sunscreen. The gnomes. The bottle.

It all made horrifying sense.

With a roar that startled every pigeon within three streets, Uncle Profit launched himself from his chair and charged across the lawn after the tiny culprits. The chase was spectacular, if not particularly successful. The gnomes scattered in every direction, darting beneath hedges, weaving between flower beds and disappearing behind garden ornaments while Uncle Profit pursued them with admirable determination.

Sadly, sunburn and sprinting are terrible companions.

After only a short chase, he accepted that victory would have to wait for another day. Defeated, bright red, and nursing the most painful lesson of the summer, Uncle Profit returned to his sun lounger while the gnomes celebrated from a safe distance behind the hedge.

To this day, the gnomes consider it their greatest operation. Uncle Profit insists it was an isolated incident that could have happened to anyone, although the neighbours still find themselves smiling whenever someone mentions sunscreen.

As amusing as Uncle Profit's holiday disaster may have been, there's a genuine reminder hidden beneath the laughter. Summer is meant to be enjoyed, whether you're relaxing in the garden, spending time at the beach, or heading off on holiday. Just remember to protect yourself from harmful UV rays, stay hydrated, and perhaps, if you happen to live near a suspicious collection of garden gnomes, double-check the label on your sunscreen before applying it.

From everyone at Print Studios, we wish you a fantastic summer filled with sunshine, laughter, and adventures of your own. Just try not to let the gnomes win.
